IWC BIG PILOT


Well, in fact a lot happened !! in the last weeks I got the opportunity to try out the new IWC Top Gun doppelchrono of which I was so fond, till I had it on my wrist .......well to tell ya the truth the whole logo thing just was to much for me, and it looked a bit cheap to be honnest ( I mean the logo and inscription on the case side) nothing wrong further with the watch, It's big (46mm) and black (you guessed that of course) and stealthy looking, but somehow I got the feeling that it was only made to continue the succes of the limited version which I prefer for the moment. So I was back to zero, ......as I re-discovered the BIG PILOT, and the whole proces started again ! I had the white gold version on my wrist and...I was in love! to expensive for me I decided to go for the steel version in ref. 5004 the second edition in fact, not that I don't love the first one but I like the refinement of the latest edition better, so decided to order this one, and now I'll have to wait until somewher in July for the delivery......my mind on the Top Gun is not completely banned, but as a first IWC Pilot watch I honnestly think the BP with its 7-days caliber made inhouse is the better deal for the moment.

Valuable information:Since 2002, the Big Pilot’s Watch has been IWC’s flagship. Its IWC-manufactured 51110 movement contains all the features that have proved their worth in the long history of IWC mechanical watches. Within no time at all, the automatic movement – currently the largest of its kind in the world – generates a power reserve of 8.5 days, but only runs for seven before an ingenious little mechanism automatically stops it. This is because the torque that drives the movement decreases as the mainspring winds down, leading to a loss of amplitude in the balance and possible inaccuracy. The screw balance, with its Breguet spring and fine-adjustment cams, is taken from the Mark 11 and has passed all its endurance tests as a “navigator’s wrist watch” with flying colours. The giant among the pilot’s watches embarked upon 2006 with a number of slight modifications, and is now available either in white gold with a slate grey “ardoise” dial or in stainless steel with a black dial, as well as a crocodile leather strap in black or dark brown. The shapes of the hands and the dial designs have been modified to match those of the other models in the series.
